2023 has been a phenomenal year for us. As 2024 unfolds, with immense pride, we announce that we have hit the remarkable milestone of successfully deploying 1 million smart meters nationwide.
We will take this momentous event as an opportunity to extend our hearty thanks to our AMI partners, vendor partners, every Kimbalite, and above all, the respective utilities for including us in this transformative journey as India powerfully moves forward to become energy-independent and energy-efficient.
As per the 20th Electric Power Survey published in Nov 2022, energy peak demand in India would be 366k Mega Watt by 2031-32. While establishments across the country are making technological innovations and infrastructural enhancements to meet this exponential surge in demand successfully, Kimbal is playing its own role in optimizing the energy distribution ecosystem. Indeed, our contribution is a crucial step towards building a more connected and intelligent energy grid.
Humans are the only species that derive their energy requirement from both food and fuel. Since our first interaction with fire, perhaps as early as 1.5 million years ago, to the invention of the steam engine in the early 17th century AD, humankind has progressed by gaining control over energy. Our ability to control and use energy has been crucial for our survival and has allowed us to make great strides in engineering, technology, and finding new energy sources.
The deployment of 1 million smart meters isn’t just a number; it’s a testament to our commitment to advancing the prestigious RDSS scheme.
Kimbal’s integrated AMI solution includes smart meters, RF-Mesh communication infrastructure, and a Head-end System, which makes it a comprehensive and cost-effective solution for utilities. We are glad to share that as we are pacing forward to serve 6 Indian states, our current order book comprises:

Our Kushal range of smart meters is designed using a meticulous manufacturing design process while keeping in perspective the broadest spectrum of ‘use conditions.’ The smart meters are designed to perform highly at all times and in all geographical conditions throughout their life cycle.
Manufactured on a unique automated assembly line, these smart meters are BIS approved and duly tested in our in-house NABL-Accredited lab and BIS-approved. They undergo ‘Accelerated Life Testing’ to confirm their robustness and high efficiency. From sourcing the bills of material to final delivery, the entire process is diligently designed to ensure the highest product reliability and the lowest product defect rate.
Further improvising our integrated AMI solution, we have developed our Head-End-System using open standards to support interoperability. That ensures that our HES optimally supports all OEM smart meters and can readily and effectively integrate with MDM.
As India progresses to deploy 250 million smart meters successfully, our commitment goes beyond the deployment numbers. Our low product defect rate establishes the maturity of our world-class manufacturing process design and the dedication of our team. Inside the Kimbal Innovation Lab, 100+ engineers are consistently and diligently innovating and improvising to build the most reliable tools to modernize the distribution grid.
