Smart Metering Companies in India: A Complete Guide for Electricity Consumers
Published on 22 July 2026
Every milestone tells the story of the people, partnerships, and purpose behind it. Kimbal has successfully deployed 12 million+ Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) endpoints across India, helping utilities modernise their distribution networks and bringing intelligent energy infrastructure closer to millions of consumers.
We will take this momentous event as an opportunity to extend our hearty thanks to our AMI partners, vendor partners, every Kimbalite, and above all, the respective utilities for including us in this transformative journey as India powerfully moves forward to become energy-independent and energy-efficient.
As India accelerates the deployment of smart metering infrastructure under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), Kimbal continues to play a significant role in building reliable, scalable, and interoperable AMI solutions that improve operational efficiency for utilities while empowering consumers with better visibility into their electricity consumption.

Humans are the only species that derive their energy requirement from both food and fuel. Since our first interaction with fire, perhaps as early as 1.5 million years ago, to the invention of the steam engine in the early 17th century AD, humankind has progressed by gaining control over energy. Our ability to control and use energy has been crucial for our survival and has allowed us to make great strides in engineering, technology, and finding new energy sources.
Today, India’s power sector stands at another transformational moment.
With smart metering emerging as the foundation of modern distribution networks, the deployment of 12 million+ AMI endpoints represents much more than a number. It reflects years of engineering innovation, manufacturing excellence, and close collaboration with utilities across the country. Kimbal’s integrated AMI ecosystem combines:
Together, these technologies provide utilities with a reliable, interoperable, and cost-effective solution for large-scale smart metering deployments. Today, Kimbal’s AMI solutions are powering projects across multiple states while continuing to expand their footprint through new utility partnerships and large-scale deployments nationwide.

Reliability remains at the heart of every Kimbal smart meter.
Our Kushal range of smart meters is designed using a meticulous manufacturing design process while keeping in perspective the broadest spectrum of ‘use conditions.’ The smart meters are designed to perform highly at all times and in all geographical conditions throughout their life cycle.
Manufactured on a unique automated assembly line, these smart meters are BIS approved and duly tested in our in-house NABL-Accredited lab and BIS-approved. They undergo ‘Accelerated Life Testing’ to confirm their robustness and high efficiency. From sourcing the bills of material to final delivery, the entire process is diligently designed to ensure the highest product reliability and the lowest product defect rate.

A modern AMI ecosystem requires more than reliable hardware.
Kimbal’s Head-End System (HES) is built on open standards to ensure interoperability across multiple smart meter OEMs and seamless integration with Meter Data Management (MDM) platforms. Complementing this is Vayu, Kimbal’s proprietary RF Mesh technology, which continues to power a majority of our smart metering deployments. Together with cellular communication options and intelligent monitoring platforms, our AMI ecosystem enables utilities to operate, monitor, and scale large deployments with greater efficiency and visibility.
Our Drishti platform further strengthens utility operations by providing real-time operational dashboards, SLA monitoring, intelligent alerts, and automated incident management across multiple HES environments.

As India progresses to deploy 250 million smart meters successfully, our commitment goes beyond the deployment numbers. Our low product defect rate establishes the maturity of our world-class manufacturing process design and the dedication of our team. Inside the Kimbal Innovation Lab, 200+ engineers are consistently and diligently innovating and improvising to build the most reliable tools to modernize the distribution grid.
Each of the Kimbalites is geared up and duly committed to ensuring that we contribute to this exemplary initiative in our best capacities and help the country make accessible Efficient Energy Everywhere.
