I Own Solar and an EV — Am I a Utility? The Rise of the Prosumer Economy

The inauguration of our new zonal office in Guwahati marks an important milestone in Kimbal’s journey, and a deeply meaningful one. This is the region where it all began for us, with a pilot of 15,000 smart meters with APDCL back in 2015. That early project has since grown into an installed base of over 2.35 million smart meters across the Northeast, with a total order book nearing 4 million across five states. Over the years, this journey has been shaped by close collaboration with utilities and AMISPs, and a shared commitment to building a more reliable, transparent, and efficient energy ecosystem for the region.

Guwahati has always been more than just a location for us. It is the gateway to the Northeast, and central to the ongoing energy transformation underway across Assam, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Meghalaya. As demand for smarter, more resilient grids grows — and as India’s national modernisation agenda accelerates under the RDSS programme — the need for stronger on-ground presence and faster coordination becomes even more critical.

“The Northeast holds immense strategic importance for India’s energy future, and our journey here began with a singular vision to empower utilities and consumers with intelligent, efficient energy solutions. We have witnessed exponential growth since our pilot project of 15,000 meters with APDCL in 2015. Today, we are proud to have an installed base of approximately 2.35 million smart meters, and a total order book nearing 4 million across the five states of this region. This new office is a testament to our resolve to not just meet, but exceed, the region’s evolving energy demands and harness its untapped potential.” – Ayush Sinhal, CEO of Kimbal Private Limited
This new office is a step in that direction. It allows us to stay closer to utilities and partners, respond faster, and contribute more meaningfully to the region’s evolving energy landscape. It will also support our monthly deployment capacity of over 1 million units while upholding the 99%+ SLA standards our partners rely on.
Our work in the Northeast spans RF mesh communication infrastructure, AI-based energy management tools, and end-to-end grid solutions, technology that enables real-time monitoring, reduces distribution losses, and builds the kind of grid reliability that communities across the region deserve. This integrated approach is what the Northeast requires: not just hardware, but intelligent energy systems that utilities can depend on for the long term.
A meaningful step for us, rooted in where we started, and aligned with the future we continue to build.
