Kimbal Participates in Metering India 2026, Highlighting the Need to Strengthen India’s Smart Metering Ecosystem

Kimbal participated in the 11th edition of Metering India 2026, organised by the Indian Electrical & Electronics Manufacturers’ Association (IEEMA) in New Delhi. Held under the theme “Smart Metering – The Catalyst for Power Sector Digitalisation,” the event brought together government officials, policymakers, utilities, manufacturers and technology providers to discuss the next phase of India’s smart metering journey.

The event provided an opportunity for Team Kimbal to engage with utilities, policymakers and industry peers, alongside dignitaries and representatives from the Ministry of Power, Government of India; Power Finance Corporation Ltd.; Central Electricity Authority (CEA); and Central Power Research Institute (CPRI). The discussions focused on moving beyond deployment targets to deliver meaningful outcomes for utilities and consumers.

Moving from Smart Meter Deployment to Meaningful Outcomes

The event highlighted the industry’s transition from conventional metering systems to intelligent, data-driven infrastructure. As smart meter deployment expands under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), the focus is increasingly shifting towards how the resulting data can improve utility operations, consumer services and power distribution management.

The inaugural session was attended by Shashank Misra, IAS, Joint Secretary (Distribution), Ministry of Power, Government of India, as the Chief Guest, alongside senior IEEMA leadership and representatives from across the electrical and metering industries. Addressing the gathering, Shashank Misra highlighted the importance of indigenisation in meter design and manufacturing. He also emphasised the need to improve consumer adoption of smart meter applications and unlock the value of the data generated by deployed meters.

Other discussions explored the importance of reliable metering infrastructure, cybersecurity, implementation, industry standards and the development of domestic capabilities to support India’s evolving power sector.

Strengthening Local Manufacturing and Communication Technologies

Representing Kimbal Private Limited, Ayush Sinhal, Co-Founder & CEO, emphasised the need to develop the wider manufacturing ecosystem to realise the full potential of the Make in India initiative.

To realise the true potential of ‘Make in India,’ we need a holistic approach that nurtures the complete manufacturing ecosystem. Strengthening our local communication technologies is a critical step that demands our immediate collective focus.

His remarks highlighted the role of indigenous communication technologies in building a stronger smart metering ecosystem. As smart metering deployments scale across India, developing domestic capabilities across the value chain will be important for building reliable, scalable and secure infrastructure.

Communication networks form a critical part of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), enabling smart meters to transmit consumption data and support remote meter reading, monitoring and other utility functions. Strengthening local capabilities in this area can help support the long-term development of India’s smart grid ecosystem.

Building the Next Phase of Smart Metering

Metering India 2026 reinforced the importance of collaboration between government, utilities, manufacturers and technology providers in advancing India’s smart metering programme. For the industry, the next phase will involve more than expanding deployment. It will require greater use of meter data, stronger consumer engagement, reliable communication infrastructure and continued investment in domestic manufacturing and technology development. Kimbal remains focused on developing intelligent metering and data platforms that support utilities in improving operations and serving consumers better.

We thank IEEMA for bringing together industry stakeholders at Metering India 2026 and creating a platform for meaningful discussions on the future of smart metering and power sector digitalisation.
